Tutorial 7
Define Barlas’s definition of patriarchy. According to Barlas, why does Islam sometimes appear
oppressive to Muslim women?
Barlas’s definition of patriarchy:
Narrow definition : rule by father.
Broad definition: politics of sexual differentiation
Sex: The categories of male and female and biological characteristics of bodies in these categories.
Gender: Culturally learned ideas about being masculine and feminine
According to Barlas, why does Islam sometimes appear oppressive to Muslim women?
Due to the misreading and interpretation of the Quran. The scholars were male and they produced
their own meaning, when there was a lot of misogyny in general.
Also, the Quran was revealed in the context of a traditional patriarchy so this lead to more misogynist
interpretation.
