SOC 885 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: High Culture, Low Culture, Wrestling
Document Summary
Sociologists and psychologists suggest that working class children have lower innate intelligence than middle class children: intelligence is inherited from parents which explains the child"s educational performance and the low social status of their parents. Two main reasons to explain class based differences: Parent"s education varies by class: upper class have more lower class have less. The probability of studying at the post-secondary level is greater if one parent has a post-secondary degree. Teachers are middle class, and therefore they treat students from different social classes differently. Teachers have more in common with other middle-class students. Schools track students by placing them into ability groupings. Teachers interact differently with students from different tracks: they give some autonomy while others are closely supervised and given little autonomy. Teachers hold different expectations for students from different classes, and for students in different tracks. They treat working class and middle class students differently.
