Lateral violence= power & oppression from someone from the same ethnicity/ culture. Eg: if two people are both indigenous and one gets promoted. The other indigenous person gets jealous and hate on the one that got promoted, instead of supporting each other. Institutionalized racism= differential access to goods, services, and opportunities of society by. Racism is bad for your health- james race: eg: limited access to quality education, employment, and housing. Internalized racism: acceptance by members of stigmatized races of negative messages about own abilities & intrinsic worth. Economic & non-economic dimensions of racial discrimination are embodied & have harmful impact on health. Most important determinants of health status= social & economic characteristics of individual. Racism-related stress may lead to chronic stress & poor mental & somatic health: eg: hypertension, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease . But hasn"t made a clear connection between racism & health: link to racism & health has only recently been explored.
