The stories of the iliad and odyssey probably circulated orally for centuries before being written down in the form we have . We don"t have an eye witness, we have someone who eventually wrote down what had been passed down for hundreds of years. Heinrich schliemann (1822-1890) used the iliad as a. historical source to locate ancient troy (in modern turkey) and mycenae, and conducted archaeological excavations at both. He found, in troy, many different phases, two of which were interesting, one around 1200 bce, (homer written down in. 750bce) and the other around 2200bce, both clearly destroyed by fire, looting, and arson. One of these must have been the destruction of troy. A tomb, the treasure of atreus, again there is nothing here that said this treasure belonged to a certain person, but this is what schliemann decided to call it.
