Urine is filtered plasma and secretions (additions from the blood into the filtrate) Reabsorption (returning useful substances from the filtrate back into the blood) Each kidney is covered by a fibrous capsule, a layer of adipose tissue (adipose capsule) and an outer dense fibrous connective tissue layer (renal fascia) Because there are no pain receptors within the kidney, pain is only present when there is impingement on the renal capsule or ureter. A ureter (approximately 25 cm long) originates near an indented area of each kidney called the hilum and travels to the base of the bladder.
