LECTURE 7
Interpersonal Relations and Conflict Management
Words do not have meaning, People create meaning
You are not in control of the meaning other derive from your messages
The triangle of meaning, according to Ogden and Richards
Symbol (the word cat) ---Thought (your image) --- referent (the actual live cat)
-The word cat is a symbol that refers or stands for creature
-The thought is your mental image of a cat
-The referent is the cat itself
-Problems caused when the referent isn’t concrete like freedom, family, or beauty
Words are symbols
The triangle of meaning was developed to illustrate how we link all words to a meaning
-Symbols: are a word, sounds or visual device that represents a thought, concept or
object
-Referents: are the things that a symbol represents
-Thought: is the mental process of creating a category, idea, or image triggered by a
referent or symbol
Words are denotative and connotative
Language creates meaning on two levels
1. Denotative: is the restrictive or literal meaning of a word
E.g. cat, a small-domesticated carnivorous mammal with soft fur, a short snout and
retractile claws. It is widely kept as a pet or for catching mice. In addition, many breeds
have been developed.
2. Connotative: is the personal and subjective meaning of a word, this conveys feelings.
- Ninjas in fur suits with knives hidden in the paws
- A quite pleasant furry creature that vaguely resembles a meatloaf
- Cats are the most intellectually superior creature on earth. They are particularly adept
at training human beings to do their bidding, and spend 18 hours a day on average
sleeping
-if cats had opposable thumbs, they, not us, would be the dominant force on this planet
Words are concrete and abstract:
-Vehicle m- abstract
-Car
-German car
-Mercedes
-Red Mercedes
-Red Mercedes 500-concrete
Words are arbitrary:
Words arbitrary represents something else
-There is not necessarily a logical connection between the referent and the symbol
-The arbitrary nature of most words means that there is no inherent meaning in a word
