ARCH 100 Lecture 3: ARCH 100 Lec 03
Document Summary
Arch 100 lec 03 tue sep 09 2014 anatomically modern humans. All contemporary populations are placed within homo sapiens sapiens. Most paleoanthropologists agree that several fossil forms, dating back as far as 100,000 years ago, should also be included in the same fully modern group as us. Matrix dates to 196,000 years ago; bones only slightly younger. Previously the oldest known traces of our species were fossils from herto, ethiopia, that date to about 160,000 years ago. The older age of the omo remains matches dates suggested by genetic studies. Modern human anatomy is documented earlier and earlier. A great time gap existed between the appearance of the modern skeleton and "modern" behaviour. Discovered in the early 2000s, the herto skulls represent one of the earliest known anatomically modern humans. These represent a position anatomically and chronologically between archaic homo sapiens and fully modern humans. Materials date to approximately 160,000 years ago.
