ARCH 226 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Conspicuous Consumption, Perspectivism, Sacred Architecture
Document Summary
First assignment coming up - watch video coming up. Midterm - short answer, long answer, m/c. Monumentality -> any kind of construction that is larger than we need it to be. Just to blow ppl"s minds (for kicks) Time perspectivism - looking at 2 diff time scales to view monuments. Conspicuous consumption -> using smth more than necc to make it happen (eg. a rich guy lighting a bill on fire to light his cigar) The society/ppl in power use labour as conspicuous consumption. Principle of least effort -> ppl are lazy, and will do as little to get by as much as possible. It doesn"t matter if they are useful or not useful. What might be utilitarian in one society might not be utiliaritan in another. Traditional thinking in archaeology = arches assume that if there"s a big construction, it means that there has to be leadership (someone in charge/authority) there.
