9.2 Issues  When did Homo Erectus leave Africa? o Dmanisi at 1.8 mya for sure o Riwat, Pakistan  Stone tools at 2 mya? ...not likely real artifacts o Java (dates for fossils in Java are as old as or older than those in Africa, this is a problem)  If Homo Erectus was in Asia by 1.8 mya, then who left Africa?  How did people get to Australia? o People in Australia atleast by 40,000 years ago and maybe as early as 60,000 years ago. o When the ocean level was lower, the islands formed Sunda Land and Sahul Land (slide 7)  Wallace Line: a deep channel dividing Java and Borneo from the other islands and Australia  Oldest boats 8,000 to 10,000 years ago o Accidental rafting? o Stone tools on Flores Island (on the other side of Wallace line from Java) at 800,000 years ago? o Toba super volcano on Sumatra 2800 cubic kilometers of magma and ash  Homo Floresiensis ("hobbit") o Liang Bua Cave, Flores o Found 7 individual hominins o About 1 meter tall, chimpanzee-sized brain, 380 cc, encephalization quotient 2.6-3.8 o Some say that the small size could be a pathology, unlikely o Island Dwarfism  Hypothesis that species that live on islands where there are no predators and
