Classic metapopulation theory is based off island biography. land surrounded by inhabitable area. Interested in how lwell each of these explain deviance in occupancy. whether a patch was going to be occupied or not. Found that area in isolation alone did not do a good job. the best predictors were in area by isolation but still only accounted for 25%. patch occupancy indicates size and help of metapopuations. Metapopulation assumes that matrix is uniform. in order for something to be recolonized, individuals need to be able to disperse between patches. otherwise whole metapopulation goes extinct. We should instead think of how terrestrial landscape looks like we know its surrounded by different types of landscapes. Looked at how matrix influenced patch occupancy models. Interested in how these different types of matrix explain variation of patch occupancy. Open circles= effects of isolation, filled= effects of area. you see that there is clear cut and other modified habitats.
