Document Summary

Factors to consider when choosing a fertility management plan. Effectiveness: remember: there"s a difference between theoretical effectiveness and actual effectiveness. Abstinence: there are two terms for abstinence continuous abstinence and periodic abstinence. There are only about 7 days a month where a woman can become pregnant = 5 days before ovulation and a couple days afterwards. Withdrawal: when a man pulls out before ejaculation, requires skill and trust , the actual effectiveness is between 70-75% Both of these must be used with spermicide to be effective. Neither are widely available in canada, and the same with spermicide. Hormonal contraception: provides the woman with external estrogen and or progesterone, these hormones prevent conception in two ways: Thickens cervical mucus: oral contraceptives aka the pill. Prevents ovulation, thickens cervical mucus and or prevents fertilization. Generally well tolerated by women with a few side effects (like weight gain, etc) May actually decrease pms and improve acne, etc.
