Health explored at individual level and population level. Population = large group of ppl; could be interested in entire country, or smaller population (i. e. prison inmates, hiv victims, etc. ) Populations health composed of health of individuals in that population. Life expectancy at birth (quality of life also significant, but life expectancy easier to measure) Infant mortality rate (imr): calculated as deaths of infants in first year of life per 1000 births. Easily obtained, countries w/ poorly kept statistics still record births + deaths. Hints at living conditions that can lead to death: poor nutrition, poor sanitation, overcrowding, violence, disease: models = representation used to think about problems. Important b/c framework person uses and perspective they adopt influences their interpretations, decisions, behaviors. Illness/medical model views health as absence of disease: when individual shows signs + symptoms of disease, doctors and/or other practitioners begin treatment to cure disease. If disease not cured, disability or premature death possible.
