Viruses replicate by using organelles in cell it infects to make more copies of self. Immune system detects alien antigens, (something that is foreign to body), then it makes antibody for it. Antibody manufactured in large quantities: with viruses, those markers are hard to identify (cuz they are using cells that are part of host/human cells, harder to produce vaccines with viruses, so many strains/constantly mutating. Where we getting virus samples to make flu vaccines: from asia, cuz westward winds come from asia, try to estimate best cocktail for flu vaccine of that year. Measles doesn"t change/mutate, antigens don"t change over time. our vaccines for that work so we have eradicated the disease. Lec 2 (cont) - the impact of medicine.
