Growth involves a series of changes not just the addition of material to achieve an increase in size. These changes involve a di erentiation of various parts of the body to perform di erent functions. Not all parts of the human body grow at the same rat, nor do they all stop growing simultaneously. The body does not retain the same proportion throughout growth and the relative weights of given. For example, the brain at bird is about 24% of its adult weight, whereas the neonatal body is only about 6 % of it"d adult weight. The reproductive organs remain at less than 10% of their nal weight until the onset of puberty. To sustain the brain as it develops very quickly. Stages of postnatal growth: neonatal period - extends from birth to the end of four weeks. Infancy - extends from the end of the neonatal period at four weeks until two years of age.
