Document Summary

Objectives: describe the organization and functions of the circulatory system. Pulmonary: get rid of co2 and load up with o2. Systemic: transport substances around the body (o2, nutrient, water, hormones, immune cells, etc. ) + get rid of waste from tissue cells (urea, co2, etc. ) 2 circuits in series (goes to pulmonary first then systemic) Arteries/arterioles = pressure reservoir; can adjust diameters of the vessel change bp: arteries = endothelium + (high) elastic tissue (aka elastin) + (very high) smooth muscle + Fibrous tissue (non-stretchy: arteriole = endothelium + smooth muscle. Capillaries = site of exchange for gases and other substances; made of only endothelium. Veins/venules = volume reservoir; very stretchy to accommodate for increase in blood volume: vein = endothelium + elastin + smooth muscle + fibrous tissue, venules = endothelium + fibrous tissue. Total blood volume ~5l (cardiac output = 5l/min all blood pumped around body per minute)
