Thoracic (limits rotation if tight), lumbar (not a lot of rotation), cervical. Transversospinalis muscle group: deep layer of instrinsic back muscles. Actions uilateral: lateral flexion turning h and n to the opposite side. Bilateral: extension note: muscle fibres run superiorly and medially go to opposite side that muscles are contracting. Radiating pain (cid:894)(cid:862)sciatica(cid:863)(cid:895: weakness, numbness, absent dtr. Pain & tenderness: muscle spasm (delayed onset) : if any neurologic ssx are present, assume #, dislocation or disc injury stabilize and transport to hospital. Rest supine 2 days: nsaid. Cold therapy at first: heat therapy later. Correct predisposing factors: gradual return to activity. As in sprains and strains: herniation of nucleus pulposus. Ssx as for sprains & strains, plus neurologic ssx (e. g. sciatica) Surgical (discectomy, laminectomy, fusion: management of back injuries.
