Document Summary

Syllogism: (also categorical syllogism) a classic reasoning form composed of two premises and one conclusion in which the logical truth of the conclusion must be derived from the premises. If all men are mortal (major premise), socrates is a man (minor premise) then socrates is mortal (conclusion) Abstract syllogism: all a are b, all c are b, therefore all a are c. Concrete syllogism: all liberals are human, all conservatives are human, therefore all liberals are conservatives. Form vs. content: all dogs are animals, some animals are pets, some dogs are pets. Conditional reasoning: a logical determination of whether the evidence supports, refutes, or is irrelevant to the stated relationship. Conditional clause: antecedent (if __, consequent (then ___) Example: if it is raining, then dominic gets wet: evidence: 1) it is raining; 2) dominic does not get wet, conclusion: 1) therefore dominic gets wet; 2) it is not raining.
