Diffusion of innovation: different phases of adopting to new technology. Companies can gain competitive advantage via products or via business processes. High switching cost: not just cost but also convenience. It (hardware and software) can be duplicated easily; but is(the way people use it, data) can make the difference of giving the company competitive advantage. 1st generation of computer was based on vacuum tubes. Large, slow, heats up, single user, housed at universities/research centers. 2nd generation of computer was based on mainframe transistors. Smaller but still huge, lower power, generate less heat, used in companies/government. Use microchip, microprocessors, first video output (monitors), first keyboard and mouse, use floppy disks to storage software. 2 types of network (local area network: deal with one small location; wide area networks: deal with outside of our office)
