Startup Secrets: How to pitch a VC the right way by Conner Forrest
A solid Series A round can net tens of millions for your company and
provide the fuel needed to propel your company to market.
Know who and how to pitch, also know how to view the value of your
company.
Be Authentic
VC’s dislike entrepreneurs who are trying to be something they’re not
You have to believe in your product and what you’re pitching.
The team and people behind the idea are often more important than the
idea itself.
Scott Friend usually looks at:
How good of an evangelist is this person going to be for their
company?
Is this someone I would want to go work for?
Joe Medved a partner at SoftBank Capital, one of the biggest mistakes is
to not introduce your team beforehand.
Investors want to know who you are and what you’ve done.
Entrepreneurs are usually creating a future reality in your head, and then
working your ass off to make it come into fruition.
See the future and tell your story
You need market projections and an emotional investment in your topic.
“The scarce commodity for investors isn’t finding good pitches, it’s
finding entrepreneurs that have real passion and real knowledge around the topic.”
Show how your passion will play out in the future, and as a result of your
involvement, the business will grow and scale in the future.
Passion + Data are essential
Target and Execute
Target a partner who can pull the trigger on the deal.
When pitching a good place to start is showing where your product
physically sits in the spectrum of solutions.

Mickiewicz lays out three essential points to make to establish where
you’re at
Why the time is right for your company to exist and thrive
Why the team is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this
opportunity and why you have an “unfair advantage” vs other players in the
market.
Traction (revenue, pricing, average order size, long term
viability/possibility, marquee clients, sales pipeline, marketing channels and
spend)
Spend a lot of time figuring out how you want to present yourself, and
send a slide deck to partners in advance.
Guy Kawasaki , The Only 10 Slides You Need in Your Pitch
10/20/30 Rule of Powerpoint, a pitch should have 10 Slides, last 20
minutes, no font smaller than 30.
Ten Slides because, the average human being cannot comprehend more
than 10 concepts at a time. If you need more than 10 slides to explain your business than
it isn’t a business.
Twenty Minutes, have no more than a 20 minute presentation so it gives
people time to come late, and also gives a lot of time for discussion, assuming you have a
1 hour slot.
Thirty Point Font, try to not have too many words on a slide, don’t force
the audience to read the material the majority of the presentation but more so have them
pay attention to you

The Business Plan Problem
Don’t think about funding if you don’t have a comprehensive business
plan that includes the details of your marketing, fundraising, and how you plan to repay
financing.
Spending too much time on a perfect business plan costs entrepreneurs
and their ventures the first mover advantage and lots of precious time that could have
been spent making sales.
