Prominent artists: renoir, cezanne, manet, degas, monet, etc. French artists felt nationalistic, wanted to create something without german influence. Search for new forms and new means. Characterized by refinement, subtlety, and abstracted sensuality. Symbolist movement: movement that dominated france, in which poets concentrated upon sound, rather than the meaning of words (at the expense of clarity) In art, subject matters became unimportant and the use of colour and its relation to light became the principal interest. A great eccentricity; on the fringe of sanity . Not sure whether his work was different because he had new harmonic and melodic ideas or whether he just didn"t have the technical abilities. Early works (such as gymnopedies) used unresolved chords and quasi-modal harmonies. Satie lived in montmartre, a hip and artistic district. Satie"s piano music used surrealistic titles such as sketches and temptations of a big wooden. Music contained commentaries to the performer such as play like a nightingale with a toothache lol.
