The self: idea of the self is linked to questions of communication. Engaging in thinking about the idea of self is a sort of communication, recognizing existence of self in others. Only able to understand who we are as persons because we are not somebody else. Idea of self only makes sense in relations to others. Brief overview of notion of the self in western thought. Examination of the central ideas of erving goffman: western thought: monochromic (less social interaction) Their conception of a person as a bounded, unique, more or less integrated motivational and cognitive universe. A dynamic center of awareness, emotion, judgement and action, organized into a distinctive whole and set against others. (clifford geertz) Indexical self: unique, bounded leads to certain attitudes that we have no responsibility or obligation towards others.
