For mass communication either mass media or mass audience is needed. Raymond williams offers us a helpful way to think about social change. In any historical period, certain institutions, cultures and forms of social organization are either dominant, emergent or residual. From the 1600s on, the monarchy and the church begin to be challenged by another force. Integrates citizens / enable expansion beyond national borders / for propaganda / urbanization / Jurgen habermas claims that the 18th and 19th centuries saw the creation of a public sphere . The public sphere: a domain in our social life where such thing as a public opinion can be formed . The pb develops in places like theaters, art, coffee houses, novels and literary criticism but also through the political press. Habermass says it"s an arena independent of government, employing autonomy from partisan economic forces, which is both accessible to entry and open to inspection .
