Hermeneutics is the Message: M Nigga
What’s up  igga. – Jackie Chan, Rush Hour. In the movie Rush Hour African-
American actor Chris Tucker walks into a bar and greets two African-American men by saying
What’s up  igga. The forall akoledge his gesture  greetig hi ak. Jakie Cha
ho’s of Asia-American decent is playing a foreigner trying to follow the lead of his partner
Chris Tuker. Jakie Cha proeeds to greet the arteder ith the sae phrase, What’s up
 igga. But this tie Jakie Cha’s greetig is iterpreted as a isult  the arteder ad
results into a physical altercation between Jackie Chan and the bystanders. When I experienced
this scene at the age of 7 years old the theatre filled with laughter. Still until this day this is one
of the most entertaining scenes throughout that movie. In this case the abstract cultural rule of
usig the phrase M Nigga, is that it’s ot aeptale to use if ou’re ot Afria-American.
While this scene was intended to be a joke that expressed cultural differences in ethics, it’s still
a strong issue in America today.
This issue brings to mind the teachings of Marshall McLuhan. The highly replicated and
epressed phrase The ediu is the essage  Marshall MLuha is a phrase that’s used to
explain the different steps in which we receive and interpret messages depending on the
variables throughout the process. I  opiio that’s etreel true, ut I ould like to
rephrase it to, The hermeneutics is the essage. Hermeneutics was described during lecture
as the art of iterpretatio. Depending on the interpretation of the sender and receiver(s)
that are associated to the use of the phrase M igga, determines whether the expression is
acceptable or not. It’s itriguig ho oe ord a e iterpreted i uerous as. In
Marjorie Garer’s readig Greatess, he eplais ho the ord Great oe eat eig
