Paget: proliferation of terms expresses both anxiety and fascination. Docufiction not a category so much as a debate. Can do anything under the category of drama. As soon as you say documentary, you evoke facts and everyone starts policing it. Drama is the place where we do emotion well; we like dramas because of how they engage emotion: want to dip in to express, convey, and articulate emotion. Reality tv picks up on anxiety as a border genre as a docufiction; both have claims on real and emotion. Combination of contemporary social issues with narrative/drama. True protagonists of everyday life are members of the audience. Success is making the audience feel need for solutions to social problems. Root of 1940"s doc is to tell stories of everyday people for others to understand why life is the way it is. We see background of what we know is happening.
