Orietnlism - othering; we are what we are because we are not them, dichotomy of us vs. them. Says more about the dominant culture by de ning what they are not. Representation of the other has changed over time. Whiteness is the norm by which race is determined even though whiteness is often not visible. Constructions of race are often unspoken and not conscious. Hall"s 2 types of racism: overt racism, inferential racism. Hartley"s strategies of inclusion and exclusion: balance. Rarely seeing multiple indigenous views or opinions within news balance seen as one of cial source and one indigenous source who speaks for everyone : naming. Not giving a name to members of speci c groups: ex. Individuals standing in as a whole; they are them because they are not us . People deemed deviant from the us : citizenship, access. Not the same, but more like us; less deviant: multiracial coverage phase.
