COGS 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Motor Skill
Document Summary
Cogs 110 - lecture 4 - interleave is worse during training, but better during later tests. Participants learn, through series of tutorials, to compute volumes of different geometric solids. 2 practice sessions separated by one week, then a final test a week after that. Had 4 practice problems for 4 diff kinds of solids. Blocked - read tutorial for particular solid & then did all practice for that solid. Interleaved - read tutorials for all 4 solids & then did practice problems that were mixed up so that each block of 4 had one of each. Interleaving gives good estimate of what test will be like. Blocking makes it difficult for retrieval b/c of learning in same order. Participants learned complex motor skill requiring rapid, multiple-component arm movements, w/ goal of minimizing response times. There were 3 diff tasks that each had diff pattern. 6 practice blocks then a retention test 10 days later.
