COGS 100 Lecture Notes - Turing Machine, Domain Specificity, Connectionism
Document Summary
Processes can be explained through physical responses. All intelligent behaviour comes from physical processes. Whether it"s a brain or a machine the turing machine is a theory of what makes an intelligent thing". Language of thought: understands mental processes as maternal language processes: writing, speaking, communication, language is physical. The mind is the function of the brain. Each of these modals started by evolutionary stimulus pressures. Domain specificity: highly specified mechanisms carry out specific jobs with fixed fields of application. Information encapsulation: unaffected while performing its work, by other systems, that don"t infiltrate. Mandatory application: automatic response to appropriate stimuli; not under executive control. Fast: timing is essential to online control of action. Fixed neural architecture: specific brain areas typically involved; genetic endowment often assumed. Specific breakdown patterns: modular systems fail in highly determinate ways. See page 131 for these conditions of modularity.
