COGS 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Cirque Du Soleil, Gorilla Suit, Change Blindness
Document Summary
Recently, i attended an amazing show at cirque du soleil: luzia. The show was comprised of individual acts that showcased talented performers in combination with an artificial but elaborate environment. Each act was unique and demonstrated careful attention to small details associated with the mexican culture, including costumes, sound, lighting, and visual effects. While the experience was visually appealing on many levels, one of the aspects that caught my interest was the smooth performance transitions. On some occasions, i did not even notice when scene prop changes took place or when background performers appeared and disappeared from the stage regardless if they were in my field of view. Since attention processing is selective and limited, one"s mental energy can only be spent while focusing on a specific stimuli. By utilizing spotlights, the audience" attention is drawn to a specific area of interest such as a performer or activity.
