Document Summary

Cogs 110 - lecture 17 - learning cont"d. Dopaminergic firing patterns comply w/ predictions of td learning. Phasic responses to cue predicting reward are proportional to magnitude of predictive reward. Unlike situation where same cue over & over again, a bunch of diff cues. Diff cues predictive of diff amounts of rewards. Example: odour is presented to rat that is somewhat predictive of future reward. Diff odours are associated w/ rewards at diff delays. Just like last study where diff cues associated w/ diff amounts of reward, but w/ diff delays instead. Longer the delay, less activation when cue comes b/c delay reduces reward. Long delays have smaller reward value than short delays. One reward delivered, magnitude of activation similar across rewards of diff delays. Errors make you feel bad (-r, competence) We have emotional attachment to errors being bad things. Answer: learning seems to be intrinsically rewarding in itself. We get some kind of positive reward from learning something.
