Unit 7: social media & youth: mobile cultures & mobile panics. Discusses the way the youth design, appropriate, use, and talk about mobile technologies. The design of affordable mobile phones has led to more access to mobile phones. Young people are the highest users of cell phones and appropriate them to their everyday lives. Youth today use mobile devices to express themselves, manage person autonomy, organize social activities, and create digital media. In the past young people congregated at malls or parks, while today social media platforms are the main channels. Part of the youths use of mobile devices is to gain independence and personal control from their parents. In the past 1980s or 1990s parents would place separate lines in the home. Baym links parents need to survey or control their children"s communication comes from moral panics. Mobile technologies are a new site for public concern.
