CMPT165The Internet Basics The Internet is a collection of computersthat is a networkall over the world connected together so that they can exchange data information between them What kind of data text images diagrams documents audio video and anything else that can be stored on a computer This information is not all stored on one computer It is spread out across many computers The terms Internet and World Wide Web are often used interchangeably however they are not actually the same thing The World Wide Web the Web is one of many services that the Internet provides Besides the Web the Internet provides many other services Email Instant messagingeg MSN Messenger Gmail Chat etc Peertopeer file transfer P2Peg BitTorrent eMule etc File Transfer Protocol FTPan older method of transferring files Network gamingConnecting to the Internet To access the Internet your computer must first connect to a gateway computer If you have a desktop computer your gateway will be provided by your Internet Service Provider ISPeg Shaw Telus etc If you have a laptop or another other device with a wireless connection the gateway will be provided by the hotspot that you connect to When you want to load a webpage
