Systematic study of crime did not begin until the 19th century (during the 1800s) Discipline of criminology did not become established in canada until the mid 20th century: first criminology program in ubc in 1951 (program was terminated in 1959) Beginning in 1960s, population of young males in canada, us and uk increased dramatically (caused by the baby boom following world war 2) 15-24 the most crime prone years- young men known to commit disproportionate amount of crime. Number of women in workforce doubled during the 1960s and 1970s, due to advent of birth control pill, greater acceptance of divorce (getting out of traditional female roles) 1960s and 1970s also time of social and political upheaval.
