Document Summary
Strain theories: generally macro-level (level that is large in scale), they share several core assumptions: 1. idea that social order is the product of generally cohesive set of norms. 2. those norms are widely shared by community members. 3. the deviance and community reactions to deviance are essential to maintaining order. Anomie: state of normlessness where society fails to effectively regulate the expectations or behaviours of its members rapid changes in society result in unclear norms which then results a state of anomie therefore higher rates of deviance. Emile durkheim: studied suicide, argued that communities influence suicide rates (some countries had higher rates than other countries- macro-level differences) and that it"s related to the amount of regulations in a society. No living being can be happy or even exit unless his needs are sufficiently proportioned to his means. Society alone holds the moral power over the individual.
