CRIM 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Socioeconomic Status, Juvenile Delinquency, Social Disorganization Theory
Document Summary
Clifford shaw and henry mckay gathered longitudinal data on juvenile delinquency in chicago. The addresses of the juvenile delinquents were plotted on city maps in order to identify the areas where juvenile delinquency was most and least concentrated. Also gathered data on the prevalence of condemned or demolished buildings which were also plotted on city maps. The maps helped establish the degree to which juvenile delinquency rates were associated with the run down areas of the city. Juvenile delinquency was most concentrated in the zone in transition: interstitial zone. Zone in transition was adjacent to the central business district: aka the loop. The business district was the first part of the city to develop: businesses and major transportation networks like roads and railways came together here. Zone in transition, next to the business loop, is described as a urban or ghetto zone. Many run down factories and buildings were unmaintained.
