Rape myths can be considered prejudicial, stereotyped, or false beliefs about rape, rape victims, and rapists . These are beliefs such as women enjoy being raped , husbands can"t rape their wives , and women ask to be raped . Rape myths: history, individual and institutional-level presence, and implications for change. The concern that myths about rape are widely believed is important for many reasons: potential impact on criminal justice outcomes for victims who bring about charges of rape. Sexual violence is an endemic problem in u. s. society (the focus of our paper), as evidenced by the fact that 18 25% of u. s. women report experiencing either an attempted or completed rape in their lifetimes. Research suggests that numerous factors are related to rape proclivity and the occurrence of sexual aggression, one of which is the acceptance and perpetuation of rape myths.
