Encourages people to be motivated in their actions by self-interest: humans are motivated to act in ways that pursue pleasure nad avoid pain, avoiding pain requires awareness of actions, encourages individuals to behave more responsibly. Punishment often minimized a mere consequence of action. Punishment becomes a conditioned reflex rather than a result of reflective introspection. Even careful punishment of children can increase anti-social behaviours. Certainty that one will be punished is based on an equal certainty that one will be . Durkheim argued that punishment"s function is to maintain social cohesion.
