CRIM 321 Lecture 3: CRIM 321 -3- 5.26.20
Document Summary
Crim 321 - lecture 3 - the ethics of qualitative research. Ethics - principles that should guide research, including interaction b/w researchers & participants. Principes - ask researchers to balance possible risk of harm associated w/ research w/ potential social benefit arising from research. As researchers, we are governed by ethics codes provided by organizations & associations to which we belong (un)limited confidentiality & the criminological enterprise. Confidentiality - requires researcher to protect/keep confidential any data collected. Protection often accomplished by not directly linking participants" identities to data. In many cases, confidentiality facilitated through use of pseudonyms for participants & places. Directives to violate confidentiality usually come from third parties. Some researchers argue ethics codes have become too prescriptive & do not capture reality of decision-making in qualitative research. Also argue that ethics review board processes not well-suited to emergent & flexible nature of qualitative research.
