Document Summary
Understanding law: a review of classical theoretical frameworks: outline: Protect from democracy: the idea of majority rule. The majority can be really powerful and we need to make sure that people who are not a part of that majority are ignored or that their rights are trampled. Our rights are entrenched in the charter constituted in 1982. Some of them only apply if you are a citizen. But there are some that you are entitled to just by the virtue of being present in the country. Ignattif thinks that we come from different places and different ideas, and that can be our uniting force. The idea of rights is to protect the minority from the majority (women can be minorities, people of color can be considered a minority). Racism and inequality: canada has very deep structures of racism and inequality e. g. name calling, colonialism, certain structures tailored to races. There are groups of people in the country with major grievances.
