Document Summary

Evolution selects individuals with genes that result in traits that help them survive and reproduce. Violence may be an example: all living organisms, including humans, are adapted to their environment. This adaptation takes many forms: structural modi cations that enhance survival and reproduction. Examples: development of complex organs, such as eyes, ears, and wings: biochemical pathways. Example: the development of metabolism, photosynthesis, reproduction: behavioral adaptations that increase survival and reproductive success. The variations can be structural, behavioral, physiological, and/or adaptations in the biochemical pathways: heritability. The variation must be heritable; it must be under genetic control so that it can be passed on to the next generation. Chapter 2 basic biological concepts: the individual trait must differ in its ability to survive or reproduce depending on this trait. However, there are also some constraints on the ability of natural selection to produce adaptation of organisms to their environment: adaptations are often compromises.
