Chapter 7: pregnancy and the effects of birth. Introduction: during fetal development, all of a bay"s systems are formed. Birth complications: complications at birth can cause myriad injuries, from physical defects to direct brain damage. Brain damage can obviously affect behavior and learning. Delays or dif culties in birth can easily result in hypoxia if not corrected rapidly. Such damage can result in later problems, such as learning disabilities, impaired cognitive abilities, attention de cit hyperactivity disorder, and schizophrenia. When two are added together, there is a very signi cant increase in violent crime: question: do some types of birth complications predispose to hyperactivity, hyperactivity is an independent predisposing factor for adult violence. If hyperactivity is added to birth problems, the result is unusually high rates of violence. Prenatal and perinatal complications had negligible or no long-term effects in advantaged families; whereas, in disadvantaged families, they did predict problems.
