Week 3 sept 23 why and how individuals become terrorists. The causes of terrorism: individual willingness to engage in terrorism, grievance, passion, alienation, social, economic, political, sense of identity, desire for revenge, charismatic leader, etc. Psychopathy: series of traits/characteristics that has being directly related to terrorism, lack of remorse or guilt + lack of empathy. It teaches you to be able to kill: frustration-aggression hypothesis. Frustration arises when goal attainment is blocked = you have variety of options and some tend to have very aggressive responses (fight-or-flight) Terrorists reasons goal attainment blocked in terms of political goals = frustration: narcissism. Where is it problematic in correspondence with narcissistic injury. *you have to be really narcissistic to go for a political goal without caring about others and the consequences *blinded to implications of your own actions: psychodynamics. Basic idea that some of our behavior as adults are result of unresolved childhood problems.
