19 views2 pages

Document Summary

Cinema/film is still the one area where we can largely count on seeing the same things. When euripides stepped on the scene he changed greek drama profoundly. The playwrights we have met until now were interested in fate, the gods, myths. We get a sense that aeschylus and sophocles were very respectful of greek traditions. Euripides wants something different he wants powerful turbulent violence. He is investigating not legends or myths or faith but the mind: mind: that perhaps doesn"t even know itself. He is easily the most psychological of the playwrights. He shows the mind being smashed by desire. Hecuba : every single thing she pinned her hope on is destroyed. He is one of the most powerful warriors. He is not so smart but he is huge and strong. One day, the gods decide to punish him. They put a thought into his head that everybody who insults him has to die.
