One f the things sacks does in this book is discuss alternative forms of western medicine. He is a nding other ways of treatment away from typical medicinal treatments. He is a certi ed neurologist and also a writer who is re ecting on his different patients. The thing about pain is that it is its own language. In terms of subjective experiences of pain, that is lacking. Feelings such as heartbreak and emotional pain are easier to describe and share with as they are not physical. Physical pain does not simply resist language but actively destroys it, bringing about immediate reversion to a state anterior to language, to the sounds of cries a human being makes before language is learned.
