Most poems by robert frost often have figurative images & metaphor, often has a dark element in the literal image. When reading poems start with what you know first. 2 prevailing images in the poem, an image of a snow covered landscape & faces the speaker compares a person"s face to an image of snow covered landscape, specifically how blank the landscape looks. Benighted snow : benighted denotes something overtaken by darkness, be nighted becoming night, could also be moral darkness, something became dark. Blanker whiteness : how can white be anymore blank, there"s nothing in white, how can it be anymore blank. 3rd stanza there"s imagery in this stanza, but it"s more figurative & needs more interpretation. Absent-spirited : think, similar to absent-minded people who are absent minded don"t really pay attention, their minds aren"t there, absent-spirited, their spirit isn"t there.
