Introduce you to the essay as a literary form: through in-depth study of well-known examples from the past & the present. Use the voices & evaluative concepts we have developed so far (coverage, expertise, analysis, terminology) and apply them to writing about the literary essay. Ask what is gained in the use of literary strategies & procedures in the essay and find some answers. Explicate such essays using literary features (figurations, pov, characterization, plot; rising action, complication, climax, resolution) Begin discussion of current, more modern & postmodern forms of the literary essay, some now residing under the title creative nonfiction . There are a # of reasons for approaching the essay as a literary genre. The narrative picture becomes complicated by its intersection w/an essay"s non-fictional status. Literary theory about narrative shows us it can be interwoven in an essay in a number of ways: exists on the micro-level so to speak.
