Speculative future: everything is artificial & man-made. Defamiliarization (estrangement- to make strange: the capacity of sci-fi texts to make the familiar world in which we"re continually immersed seem strange to the point we can see that world from an almost alien perspective. A periodizing hypothesis names a particular historic era. Absence of stable truth: suspicious of absolute truth- morality, religion, tradition, science, sense of living after something, world is broken into smaller competing subjective narratives. Entropy a measure of the disorder or randomness in a closed system. A measure of the loss of info in a transmitted message. The tendency for all matter and energy in the universe to evolve into a state of inert uniformity. Inevitable & steady deterioration of a system or society. Weakening of individuality: modernism- genius, stylistic individuality, pain of individual, post-moderns- less sense of individual voice. Lack depth & rich interior lives, blank generic versions, interchangeable, sense that they are supposed to be individuals.
