CONS OF UTOPIA:
-1) DYSTOPIA is considered to be a CON of Utopia. A Dystopia is an imagined place or state in which
everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a toleration or environmentally degraded one, it is the opposite of a
Utopia; which is an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect.
-2) COLONIZATION is considered to be a CON of Utopia. Colonization is the action or process of settling
among and establishing control over the indigenous people of the area. It is the action of appropriating a
place or domain for one’s own use.
QUOTE EXAMPLE: “When the Utopias’ population grows too numerous they move some people to “the
neighbouring continent” and “ﬁx a colony” (87)
QUOTE EXAMPLE: “If the natives refuse to conform themselves to their laws they drive them out of those
bounds which stye mark out for themselves, and use force if they resist” (87).
-3) PATRIARCHY is considered to be a CON of Utopia. A Patriarchy is a system of society or government
in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male line. It is
asylum of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it. It is
a society or community organized on patriarchal lies, love for one’s country.
QUOTE EXAMPLE: “The oldest man of every family..is its governor; wives serve their husbands” (88). In
Utopia, women work, or even ﬁght in war alongside men. But—they are still on a lower level socially?
-4) RESTRICTION ON MOVEMENT OR SURVEILLANCE is considered to be a CON OF UTOPIA.
QUOTE EXAMPLE: “Such as travel carry with them a passport from the Prince, which both certiﬁes the
license that is granted fro travelling, and limits theme of their return” (93) Those who do not conform to this
rule are “severely treated”
QUOTE EXAMPLE: “All men live in full view” (93).
-5) SLAVERY is considered to be a CON of Utopia.
QUOTE EXAMPLE: “The slaves among them are only such as are condemned to that stat of life for their
commission of some crime, or.. such as their merchants condemned to die in those parts to which they trade,
whose they sometimes redeem at lower rates…They are kept at perpetual labour, and are always

EXAMPLE QUOTE: Because there is no property,there is no inequality, and there is need for only a “few
laws”; every man lives in plenty” (67).
