Vocabulary Assignment # 3
(1) Medicine Wheel Pedagogy:
Is an Indigenous pedagogy, which entails four quadrants (north, west, east, and south), each part
represents life experiences in a certain stage. Also, it symbolizes wholeness and balance. For
instance, in the class by using the medicine wheel we acquired a better understanding for the term
ā€œall my relationā€. By going over all the four parts of the medicine wheel we acknowledged that each
part of the circle typiļ¬es a speciļ¬c stage and they are interconnected. In other words, the process
enabled our group to better comprehend this term and realize that the four aspect of the circle is
interrelated to one another.
(2) Reconciliation:
Is an apology from a person(s) who has harmed another individual(s). In other words, the
perpetrator acknowledges the harm he/she has done, and has a motive to make amends with the
victim. More speciļ¬cally, it is a process of forgiveness and redemption. For instance, a form of
reconciliation is discerned with the Pawnees when they returned to their homeland. The welcome
home Pawnee days in Nebraska is a form of redemption in action. Thousands of people attended
and showed their apology by welcoming the Pawnees back to their homeland.
(3) Aboriginal Title:
Is unique inherent right that aims to protect Indigenous people and their territories. Also, it signiļ¬es
that Aboriginal people were the original inhabitants that emigrated to Turtle Island. The Title gives
full jurisdiction to Indigenous Nations in regards the decisions they make about their lands such as
the way they want to use their lands and resources. The ultimate goal of the Title is to preserve the
relationship between Indigenous People and their lands.
(4) Doctrine Adverse Possession:
Provinces have the power to disregard the rights stated in the Aboriginal Title by proclaiming that
the possession of a land will lead to a better use of property. Therefore, individuals, businesses, and
governments can occupy and control lands that belong to First Peoples by arguing that they have
good interests. This doctrine is unfair and suggests that Indigenous people are unable to decide what
is the best way to use their lands and resources.
(5) Indigenous Sovereignty:
Aboriginal peoples inherent right to self-government, which means that they have full authority to
control their lands and resources. Aboriginal people believe that sovereignty is not granted nor
subjected to any Nation, it is a scared gift from the Great Spirits. Therefore, it is Indigenous
peopleā€™s responsibility and right to protect and govern their traditional territories.
