GEOG 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Geostationary Orbit, Heat Capacity, Shortwave Radiation
Document Summary
Lecture 4: review: platforms, satellite platforms and sensors, platform orbits, sensor types, sensor swaths, multispectral sensors and images. Sensor types: sensor swath spatial coverage, the wide of the strip imaged. Imaging swaths for space borne sensors generally vary between tens and hundreds of km wide. Off-nadir: sensor pointed at an angle: some sensors have detectors which are pointable, e. g. direction can change, other sensors have a set of fixed detectors. Uses rotation mirror that scans the terrain systematically from right to left, perpendicular to the flight direction. Successive scans acquired as the scanner moves forward. These narrows strips overlap slightly to build up the contiguous image. Visible bands are ideal for cartographic and general land use interpretation. Nir imagery offers a useful means for soil analysis, vegetation studies, and for land, water delineation. Swir 1: indicative of vegetation moisture content and soil moisture, differentiation of snow from clouds. Sensitive to vegetation moisture content and soil moisture content.
