GEOG 111 Lecture 7: 7
Document Summary
Lecture 7: earth crust dynamics and the rock cycle. Earth scientists are interested in understanding the processes that shape the surface of the lithosphere the outermost rock layer of the earth. Landforms on the earth"s surface develop in response to processes operating within (endogenic) and on the surface of (exogenic) the lithosphere. Examining and determining the composition of the lithosphere adds to our understanding of the processes which shape and rearrange the earth"s surface materials throughout geologic time. Topics covered: earths geologic time scale, earth materials and the cycle of rock change. Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks: plate tectonics, volcanism and diastrophism, rock weathering, mass movement processes and landforms, limestone weathering and karst landscapes. Textbook readings: complete the following in preparation for lecture 7: all of chapter 12, chapter 13 (pg 394-399, chapter 14 (pg 428-447) The geologic time scale represents a timeline of all earth history.
